I have a rule in the workshop: if it can be made out of something unexpected, it should be. This coral reef is proof that rule leads somewhere really good.
What you are looking at is basically a cardboard box, a can of expanding foam spray, some paint, and a pile of pool noodles. That is it! The result looks like something that belongs at the bottom of the ocean, and it stopped everyone in their tracks the moment it went on display.
The Base: Cardboard and Expanding Foam
The foundation of the reef is a plain cardboard box. Once it is positioned and ready, expanding foam spray is applied over the entire exterior. The foam hardens as it cures, creating a bumpy, organic texture that mimics the rough, irregular surface of a real coral reef. No two spots look the same, which is exactly the point. Once fully cured and hardened, the whole base gets painted in a deep purple to set the underwater mood and tie all the coral colors together.
The expanding foam does all the heavy lifting here. It adds dimension, texture, and structural rigidity to what was just a plain box, and it does it fast. This is one of those materials that feels like a cheat code once you discover it.
The Coral: Pool Noodles Cut Into Shapes
The coral pieces are made from pool noodles cut and shaped into different designs. Tall twisted stalks of neon green become flowing seaweed reaching toward the surface. Pink noodles sliced into rings and stacked create chunky, textured coral columns. Blue noodles cut lengthwise and curved form ribbon-like coral fans. Each piece is a different shape, a different color, a different height, which gives the whole reef that layered, alive quality that makes it feel real.
The pieces are secured into the foam base, which holds them firmly in place. Once everything is arranged and set, the reef becomes a single cohesive sculpture that is surprisingly sturdy for something built from foam and pool supplies.
What It Was Made For
This reef was built as a decoration for an under the sea themed event, and it absolutely delivered. It anchored the whole space and gave the room an instant sense of place. Kids gravitated toward it immediately. Adults kept asking how it was made.
It would work just as well for a Little Mermaid birthday party, a school hallway display, a VBS theme, or a bedroom that needs a serious wow moment. The scale is what makes it. This is not a small centerpiece. It is a statement.
Sometimes the best builds start with a box and a wild idea. This one definitely did.
