If there is one group of people who deserve to feel celebrated, it is teachers. And if there is one thing I know, it is that a gift card in an envelope does not quite say "you changed my kid's life." So when Teacher Appreciation Week rolled around, I went to the workshop instead of the store.
The result? A batch of custom beaded lanyards that had teachers stopping each other in the hallway to ask where they came from. Mission accomplished.
The Design
Each lanyard is strung on a black cord with silicone beads in a custom color palette and finished with a round wood disc pendant and a black swivel badge clip at the bottom. The wood disc is the detail that makes it feel handmade in the best possible way. It is warm, natural, and just different enough from anything you would find in a store to make it feel truly special.
The silicone beads come in so many colors that you can customize each lanyard to match a teacher's personality, classroom colors, or favorite palette. I made a set of five and no two were exactly alike, which made the gifting moment even more fun. Each teacher got something that felt made just for them, because it was.
Practical and Pretty
One of my favorite things about this project is that it is not just decorative. Teachers wear lanyards every single day. Their keys, their badge, their classroom fob. A beautiful lanyard is something they will reach for every morning, and every time they do, they will remember that someone took the time to make it by hand.
That is the kind of gift that sticks.
Not Just for Teacher Appreciation Week
Here is the thing about this gift: it works all year long. Teacher Appreciation Week in May is the obvious moment, but honestly there are so many other perfect occasions to show up with a handmade lanyard in hand. Meet the Teacher night at the start of the year. Open House. The First Day of School, which is right around the corner for a lot of us. And Christmas, when a thoughtful handmade gift stands out in a sea of candles and mugs.
Any time you want to make a teacher feel seen, this is the gift. It is personal, it is practical, and it is something they will actually use every single day.
A Note on Gifting Handmade
I always say that handmade gifts carry something store-bought ones cannot: intention. When you make something for someone, you are giving them your time and your creativity, not just your budget.
