Every teacher has had that moment. A student knocks on a closed door. A parent lingers in the hallway. A colleague peeks in wondering where they went. The answer is always somewhere, but communicating that without being there is the challenge.
That is where this project came in.
I made a batch of personalized "Where Am I?" signs for teachers, and they became one of the most talked-about gifts I have ever made. Practical, personal, and genuinely useful every single school day.
What Makes These Special
Each sign is built on a wood base and customized with vinyl lettering using my Cricut. The top reads "Where Am I?" in a flowing script, and below it is a checklist of the most common teacher locations: Please come in, In a meeting, Be right back, Off campus, With a student, Please Do Not Disturb, and my personal favorite, Observing awesomeness.
The teacher's name goes at the bottom, and each sign gets a custom graphic that reflects their personality. One got a sunflower. Another got a rainbow heart. The personalization is what takes it from a useful sign to a gift that feels made just for them, because it was.
The Cricut Does the Heavy Lifting
The vinyl work on these signs is where the Cricut really shines. Each line of text is cut in a different color, which gives the signs that bright, cheerful classroom energy without feeling chaotic. The icons next to each location option are cut separately and layered on, adding just enough detail to make the whole thing feel polished and intentional.
Once the vinyl is applied and sealed, the sign is ready to hang. Teachers can use a clothes pin or a small arrow to indicate where they are, or simply point to the relevant option with a clip or magnet.
The Perfect Back-to-School Gift
I made this first batch for back-to-school, and the timing could not have been better. Teachers were setting up their classrooms, decorating their doors, and getting organized for the year ahead. A sign like this fits right into that energy. It is functional from day one and decorative enough to stay on the door all year long.
